Veronika Hauer / Lingual Limbs
16 May – 11 July 2025
QL Galerie, Graz
Language, its mediation, and its relationship to the body form the ironic and critical focus of Veronika Hauer’s work. The soundtrack for the exhibition is the English nursery rhyme “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words shall never hurt me,” first recorded in 1830.
Aware of the performative power of language, Veronika Hauer counters the rhyme’s original intention with an ironic twist. Comic-like, stylized bones, both painterly and sculptural, form an alphabetical system that is inscribed in the exhibition like the “skeleton of language.” Hauer thus begins a coded play with meaning, poetry, sense, and nonsense, which continues in the participatory installation by Veronika Hauer and Australian artist Katie Lee.
