Blue and Melting, 2024
Galerie Zimmermann Kratochwill

The human gaze on apes and their contrasting function in European cultural discourse over the centuries are the focus of the current drawings and objects by Veronika Hauer, who has devoted her work to portraits of monkeys several times since 2019. Her newest installation blue and melting uses the so-called monkey chapel of the porcelain factory Meissen as a motif. In her drawings, the music-making, singing and conducting monkeys from the so-called monkey chapel by the German porcelain factory Meissen blur and melt, and reveal a distorted image of this only apparently humorous representation of the monkey. An oversized melting pine cone with inserted glass beads satirized objects of so-called species-appropriate animal husbandry.
